Peter Savage serves an Ace in time for the 2008 Wimbledon Championships.

In 1993, The All English Lawn Tennis Club (AELTCC) set out to enhance Wimbledon's widely acknowledged reputation as the world's number one tennis event by substantially improving the quality of the Wimbledon experience for everyone — players, spectators, media, officials, members and those who work at the event. Since then, guided by a blend of tradition and innovation, the Club's grounds and facilities have been transformed into one of the UK 's most famous and evocative sporting arenas and home to the world's premier tennis event.

A key aspect of the £25 million pound design and build project was to provide improved access for cable & communication service's, a vital median for transporting the latest news and images around the globe. To cover such a sporting event, literally thousands of feet of fibre optics and cables are required and with expected gate volumes of over 450,000, logistically the two would not coincide without incident and prior planning. The opted solution of burying the cables below ground ticks most boxes but unfortunately this does not consider the T.V. and Telecommunication companies who have to manually install and remove their cables and optics needing continuous access. By utilising the wealth and experience of Peter Savage Limited who have been providing access solutions for over 30 years, Galliford Try answered this need by specifying the Peter Savage 6900 series continuous duct system. This access system has been developed to span and conceal service channels whilst providing easy un-obstructed access.

6900 series Multiple Recessed Continuous Duct SystemThe Peter Savage 6900 access system is designed and manufactured to suit site specific layouts and can feature any number of T-junctions, intersections, 90 degree turns and non-standard angle turns. This dynamic approach required Peter Savage Limited to visit Wimbledon to execute site takeoffs & provide technical information for input into their computer assisted design and solid modelling software. Peter Savage Limited generated scaled general assembly and technical drawings to sub-contractor Byrne Bros for approval purposes.

The 6900 access system consisted of three duct runs; the first being a 100 metre heavy duty run (44 tonne) which leads from gate 12 up to the new No.2 court (due to be completed in 2009). This 100 metre run includes a T-section connecting it to a 38 metre run which is the first of two 10 tonne runs.

Wimbledon 6900 installationThree 6900 series access systems were supplied in two load ratings, F.A.C.T.A. Class AAA – a 10 tonne gross laden vehicle weight rating and F.A.C.T.A. Class B – a 44 tonne gross laden vehicle weight rating. The heavier load rating was required due to the fact that they would be trafficked by emergency vehicles as they gained access to new number 2 court. This Class B system which totals 100 metres in length connected to a 38 metre Class AAA system by means of a special T-junction. The second Class AAA system was connected to the Class B system by way of a special 90 degree angle but also included a further two 143 degree angles to take it around the Café Pergola. The combined length of all three duct runs totals 179 metres and consists of 560 individual lids and 2240 lifting points. Once the manufacturing and galvanising process had been completed each duct run was assembled & inspected prior to delivery at the Peter Savage manufacturing plant in Nuneaton .
